Pandemic Influenza and Avian Influenza Information on Pandemic and Avian Influenza Health Officials Identify Hantavirus Case - July 2007 Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (also known as HPS) is a rare, but serious illness that occurs throughout the United States, including California. For most people, the risk of getting HPS is extremely low. The illness can be prevented by taking precautions. Health officials in El Dorado County identified a case of HPS among a local resident in July 2007. The person who was sick has recovered. The strain of HPS found in the United States cannot be passed from person to person, and cannot be transmitted to cats, dogs or other livestock. Deer mice are the primary carriers of the virus that causes HPS in California. The best way to protect yourself against HPS is to keep mice and other wild rodents out of your sheds, barns, cabins and other enclosed places by making sure these buildings are sealed up properly. If large numbers of rodents are present in a home or building, contact a pest control service to remove them. When entering or cleaning a shed, barn, cabin or other building that may have been infested with rodents, use caution. Open the doors and windows to allow the building to air out for at least 30 minutes or more before going in. Do not touch live rodents. Use disposable plastic gloves and a diluted bleach solution when removing dead rodents or cleaning areas where rodents have been. Do not sweep or vacuum the area. Press Release with additional information - July 12, 2007 To download hantavirus brochure click here.
