It’s Not Too Late to Get a Free H1N1 Vaccine
Community Clinics Offer the Vaccine for All Ages; Some Kids May Need a Second Dose

[.pdf]

For people who have been thinking of getting the H1N1 (swine) flu vaccine, or for younger children who may need a second dose of the vaccine, two upcoming community H1N1 vaccination clinics in El Dorado County may be just what the doctor ordered.  The clinics will offer the H1N1 vaccine free of charge and are open to all El Dorado County residents and all ages, ranging from infants to senior citizens.

The dates and locations of upcoming community H1N1 vaccination clinics include:

  • Feb. 3 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at South Tahoe Middle School in the multipurpose room, 2940 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, South Lake Tahoe.
  • Feb. 18 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Light of the Hills Lutheran Church in the Fellowship Hall, 3100 Rodeo Road, Cameron Park (behind Burke Junction).

The community flu shot clinics in the Placerville area are sponsored by the El Dorado County Health Services Department, Public Health Division; the clinics in South Lake Tahoe are organized by Barton Health and co-sponsored by the Health Services Department and the Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

The H1N1 vaccine is also available for free by appointment at the El Dorado County Health Services Department by calling (530) 621-6100 in Placerville or (530) 573-3155 in South Lake Tahoe.  During the month of February, residents of South Lake Tahoe may also receive the H1N1 vaccine through one of the walk-in clinics held each Wednesday afternoon from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Health Services Department located at 1360 Johnson Boulevard, Suite 103, in South Lake Tahoe.

Children aged 9 years and under should receive two doses of the vaccine, administered at least four weeks apart, to have the best protection.  There are some individuals, such as people who are severely allergic to eggs and infants under the age of six months, who should not receive the H1N1 vaccine.  Individuals should consult with their health care provider if they aren’t sure whether or not they should receive the vaccine.  Detailed information about the H1N1 vaccine can be found at www.flu.gov.

According to El Dorado County Health Officer, Dr. Olivia Kasirye, the H1N1 virus continues to circulate in the community and there is still value in getting the H1N1 vaccine. “This virus has been unpredictable. It is possible that we could have another wave of illness from H1N1, so getting the vaccine now is a good idea,” said Dr. Kasirye.
