The Chief Probation Officer, Assistant Chief Probation Officer, Deputy Chief Probation(s), and Fiscal Administrative Manager administer countywide probation operations and services, which include juvenile and adult court and supervision services, juvenile detention and treatment services, victim services, collections, support services and special programs.

The Probation Department has over 100 full-time employees and additional part-time staff assigned to the Main Office in Shingle Springs, the branch office in South Lake Tahoe, the Placerville Juvenile Hall and the South Lake Tahoe Juvenile Treatment Center.

The Probation Department partners in special projects with many government, education, law enforcement, and community agencies within El Dorado County and throughout the State of California.

   Support Services   

The Support Services Division of the Department provides fiscal, personnel, accounting, clerical and all other related support services to all Probation activities. The Fiscal Division of the Department is centralized at the Main Probation Office. Clerical support staff is located at each field office and juvenile detention facility. The functions of this unit include.

Budget:
Annually, the Probation Department is required to prepare a budget that meets the goals of the Board of Supervisors, Chief Administrative Officer, and the Courts. This preparation takes months and the unit works closely with the Chief Probation Officer, department probation managers and the Chief Administrative Officer to ensure all Department needs are identified in the budget documents. This unit is also responsible for monitoring budget cost centers to ensure compliance with the approved budget.

Revenue Recovery:
Activities include collection and distribution of victim restitution, Court fines, restitution fines, probation fees and various miscellaneous collections as ordered by the Court. Activities also include billing and collection of parental reimbursements for juvenile detention as identified in Section 903 of the California Welfare and Institutions Code.

Accounting Activities:
There are multiple accounting activities performed by fiscal staff on a daily basis that include:

  • Accounts Payable
  • Grant Monitoring
  • Department Inventory Tracking
  • Procurement of all Probation supplies, minor equipment and fixed assets
  • Financial Report Preparation

Contracts:
The Department processes numerous contracts and works closely with other county agencies to ensure contracts are submitted in a timely manner and necessary approvals are obtained. The Department also processes various Memorandums of Understanding (MOU) with other governmental agencies and other County Departments.

Clerical Support Services:
Services provided include document processing for Probation activities, case file maintenance, record retention and public support services. This unit provides direct support to Probation sworn staff and administrative support to management staff.

Payroll Service/Personnel Services:
This fiscal unit processes time sheets for the entire department including our 24-hour facilities. This process includes balancing our Department’s payroll to the County’s automated payroll database. Personnel services provided in this unit include processing of all personnel requisitions, coordination of new hire processes such as background investigations, medical and psychological examinations and fingerprinting.

Information Technology Services:
The division has responsibility to manage the information technology needs for the entire Probation Department, including: implementation and maintenance of the departments’ case management systems; processing of reports to extract data and statistics from the case management system; management, maintenance and support for all department computers and computer systems; maintaining a current computer inventory listing; and representing the Probation Department as a liaison with El Dorado County’s Information Technologies Department and a variety of technology-related vendors.
